Breakfast grits. Yum! Out of all the breakfast options our family has, grits are close to number one in my kids’ favourite choices. Creamy, salty, buttery grits. Lovely to wake up to, and always bring a smile to their faces.

As a Canadian, I didn’t grow up eating grits. I was introduced to grit-eating only after I was married, and I have no idea where my husband’s family got their love of grits for breakfast. All I know, is that they are delicious!
Okay, so let’s talk about how to make them. First off, you want to start with quick-cooking grits. At least that’s all we’ve ever used. Follow the instructions on the package to make the appropriate amount for the number of people you are feeding.
While you are boiling your water for the grits, you’ll want to have the BACON cooking. This is how to make the best bacon. Bacon is everything when it comes to grits for breakfast. Believe me.
When your bacon is cooked, and the grits are done, you’ll want these things on hand for the toppings:
- salt
- pepper
- real butter
- shredded cheese
I always start out with a bowl about half full of grits. Press a good tablespoon of butter into the middle of your bowl of hot grits. Allow the butter to melt before you add a generous sprinkling of shredded cheese, a crumbling of bacon and a good dose of salt and pepper.
Enjoy your grits for breakfast!
