Here I show you in this tutorial how to cast on and knit left-handed. For you who are left-handed and want to know how to knit, this is the post you’ll want to read!
Here are the items you’ll need to learn:
When learning something new, like knitting, I recommend setting some time aside in a quiet spot. You don’t want any distractions, otherwise, you’ll be discouraged. 🙂
Here we go with step 1:
Making a slip knot. As the photo below shows, cross the yarn with the long tail laying on top of the short tail forming a “rabbit hole”, so to speak.
Bring the long tail end up through the rabbit hole as a loop. Pull the loop and there will be a knot formed at the bottom of the loop….
Just like the photo below. This is what you want to slip over your knitting needle.
Your first stitch cast on will look like the photo below. The knot will slide up and down the yarn, so tighten it loosely on your knitting needle.
Step 2: Casting on more stitches.
Okay, here is step 3: knitting!
Cast on five more stitches, just for practice, and place your needle full of stitches in your left hand. With your right hand, go up through the front of that first stitch, coming out behind your left-handed needle. Take your time.
Wrap the yarn around the right-handed needle from front to back, holding the yarn always with your left hand. Hang on, we’re almost there!
Now. Bring that right needle, with the yarn wrapped around it, to the front. Be careful not to let the yarn loop slip off. 🙂
You’re almost there! I promise. Now you’re going to slip the old stitch off the left needle. And you’ve now knit your first stitch! Keep going in the stitch, around the back, back out the front and slip the old stitch off. Do this until there are no more stitches left on your left-hand needle. Now, switch needles so the needle with stitches is always in your left hand, and the working needle is in your right.
Yay! You’ve learned to knit left-handed! Way to go. If you have to go through these steps a few times, that is okay. It is a skill you’ll for sure learn, and soon it will be like riding a bike!
