What does the word “sustainable” mean?
So, if we are going to maintain this homeschooling life at a certain rate, what is that rate? How do we maintain it? To make something sustainable means we can keep it up over time.
Homeschooling is a tricky thing. Do we finish the curriculum we bought? Do we buy what everyone else is buying? Are our kids getting enough academically? Are we cherishing them enough….never mind the whole socialization topic. I called it a socialization topic because it’s NOT an issue. Definitely not. Trust me.
This lifestyle of homeschooling is something that needs to be carefully maintained. Only by finding our family’s delicate balance will we be successful in it.
Searching time and time again for a successful strategy, I’ve come up with a few changes that have impacted our life for the better!
- We stopped doing school on Fridays – Yay!
- Some of our subjects have become group subjects
- I stay on top of checking and marking
- We have looked for the best curriculum for our family, and finally found it!https://www.goodandbeautiful.com/
- I choose to stay home as much as I can(saving Target for Fridays :))
- We started our school year in July last year ( yes, July)
- If we need a day off, we take it, no problem
Happy kids=happy Mom!
These items above are just a few things that we’ve changed to make homeschooling sustainable for us. The most important lesson I have learned is to just keep going!
If you just keep going, you will not fail them.
Time and time again, when we first started homeschooling, I would get overwhelmed with the curriculum’s teacher guide. Too much. Too long. Throw a nursing baby into the mix, and it tended to end in defeat and disaster!
If we would just realize that things are better off when we are simpler!
Today is a Friday. We went to the park as a treat, brought the dog, got some fresh air. I’m so glad we did this. I can shake off the homeschool cultural pressure that maybe I should have been in the museum or at a co-op class. What we accomplished today was finding what filled up my kids for right now. For today. We lived simply, and that is enough.
