With being stuck in the house due to the heat and the virus, our kids have had to be a little inventive. Some of it has been awesome with using their imaginations, and other times it’s been a bit couch potato-ish. Let’s see what they’ve been up to, shall we? On to the kids’ summertime update!
We live in Houston. It’s been at least 99 degrees F with humidity making it feel like 110 this last week. Our kids are not venturing outside, much less playing/reading out there. It really feels like an inferno!
So, we homeschool year round in our family. Our kids finished up most of their schoolwork in April. We just finished up math a couple of weeks ago -can you tell that our kids are not fond of math? haha One of the reasons we homeschool year round is so that we can take more breaks during the cooler part of year. Also, my kids got so bored last July, that I ordered the schoolwork early, and we started in July! It’s been wonderful to take breaks when we need them, and also to do schoolwork only 4 days a week.
So…what have the kids been up to while they’re stuck at home in the house? Well, let me tell you. Back in May, they decided to start a newspaper. It’s called ‘Porter’s Public’, and each of the kids contributes something every week, as well as some friends. They’ve had the greatest fun with this newspaper! Emailing it back and forth with their friends, and printing it out to make it look exactly like a real newspaper! Even Maggie the dog has a column! What great fun for them.
I caved in and bought a huge Lego set. And yes, our girls chose a Ninjago lego set! They surprise me sometimes. This large set took them an afternoon to put together, and then they played with it for a few days. I’m not worried that it was a waste of money because I know they’ll return to it in a couple months. Toys and activities seem to rotate around here.
Lastly, they’ve been reading a lot! L.M. Montgomery, Jane Austen, and Tolkien, to name a few. Oh, yeah, Leah just informed me that she read Peter Pan. She told me it was kind of creepy, but a beautiful kind of creepy, if that makes sense? haha
Here’s hoping that some of this post inspires or encourages you with your kids. This has been a super hard few months on everyone, so let’s get the creative juices flowing and find things to do to keep us busy and distracted. Thanks for stopping by!
p.s. They’ve also been playing around on the piano!(No lessons, yet.)
