What you need to have on hand to make super easy sloppy joe’s with tomato soup!
- Ground beef. I like to use low-fat ground beef because I’m lazy! I hate draining the fat off of meat.
- Chopped onion. For this you will need a decent knife. Especially a sharp one. One day I’ll do a post on sharpening knives and the importance of having a sharp knife.
- Chopped celery.
- Salt. I like himalayan pink salt. Mostly just because it is pink;)
- Garlic powder or garlic salt.
- Sugar.
- Ketchup.
- Tomato soup. Don’t worry about sticking with a name brand can of soup for this recipe. It’s basically a platform for all the other flavours to stand on.
- A really good bun, or if you like, a store bought hamburger bun.
How to make sloppy joe’s.
- Brown 1 lb of ground beef in a large pot or skillet with one chopped onion and 2 cups of chopped celery.
- When the beef is done cooking, drain the fat off by tipping your pot slightly, and spooning out the fat into a heatproof mug or bowl. ( You know the beef is done cooking when it is no longer pink in the middle.)
- Add 1 tsp of salt, 1/4 tsp of garlic salt *or* 1/4 tsp of garlic powder, and 1 tsp of sugar.
- Measure 1/2 cup of ketchup and one can of tomato soup.
- Mix all together and let simmer for at least 20 minutes.
- Serve over a split hamburger bun.
Tricks and tips in making this easy sloppy joe recipe!
- Go ahead and add extra celery or onion! If you have some limp celery in the fridge that needs to get used up, go for it.
- Don’t let it simmer too long. The hamburger will break apart and the texture of the sauce will change.
- If you want, go ahead and make this earlier in the day, and keep it warm in the crock pot. Just make sure you put the crock pot on low heat.
- Easily swap out garlic powder for garlic salt, and vice versa.
- You can easily add more ground beef to the mix, also. I used extra beef when I made it in the video.
- This is great as a leftover!
