We all love our homes to smell nice. Especially in the winter, when it gets close to the holidays, we tend to crave certain smells. Orange, cloves, cinnamon and pine are some of the scents that make us feel all the cozy feelings, right? Here are some wintery, holiday scents I’ve been using in our home.
First of all, I love the smell of beeswax. My dad had bees when I was growing up, and the smell of beeswax makes me feel like I’m 8 again. I found this beeswax candle at a local farmer’s market last week, and I could not go home without it. The smell of it burning is quite subtle, but beautiful – and so is the way it burns. It’s probably the prettiest thing in my house right now.
Second, I have been getting my girls to make clove oranges every year since they could push the cloves into the orange rind! My mother-in-law introduced me to making clove oranges when we were first married, and it brings back wonderful memories when I see and smell the delicious orange/clove combination. Simple and beautiful.
And third. This scented tradition is rather new to me. Using essential oils in a diffuser to make our home smell festive has only been something I’ve done for a couple years now. I love it. I fill my diffuser with water, and put equal amounts of essential oils in. Usually about 5 – 10 drops each of orange, clove, cinnamon and surprisingly, rosemary. If you don’t have pine essential oil, rosemary gives that same earthy, sappy smell to your blend.
And that’s it for the wintery, holiday scents for your home. For now, anyway;) I’m sure I’ll come up with more for next winter. It really is a beautiful thing to make something that smells nice, or burn a special candle. The way I see it, it’s so dark and cold during the winter months that we need all the help we can get!
